Serigraphx Is Going Green

Going green is not as hard as some people think. Serigraphx has being going green since it’s inception in 2005. We started by replacing our incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). While the upfront cost is more, CFLs use less energy and last much longer saving you money in energy costs in the long run. Sure there is some contension about CFLs taking more energy to be manufactured when compared to an incandescent bulb, but a single CFL will predominantly last as long as up to 10 incandescent bulbs while using 4 times less energy. Energy Star provides a wealth of information on the different types of CFLs and how to choose the right bulb for your home or business.

To further increase our energy savings we have required that all of our computers be turned off after working hours. If this simple procedure was adopted by every American business it could have a significant impact on our over all energy costs. According to Jamin Chua, a journalist for Planet Green, the US energy consumption would be reduced by 54.3 kilowatt-hours for a savings of approximately $4.7 million in energy costs. While our business alone will not reach this figure anytime soon, Serigraphx is contributing in a small part to the overall goal of saving energy and reducing our costs.

The major change that our screen printing shop made in going green was in the chemicals we use to make and reclaim our screens. We have replaced our petroleum base chemical solutions with biodegradable, non-caustic, non-toxic chemical products such as Strip-e-doo, a screen reclaimer from Franmar, a green company that uses soybeans to manufacture biodegradable cleaning reagents. Serigraphx now takes full advantage of Franmar’s biodegradable line of products to make our screen printing shop a better and healthier place to work. We have also moved away from aerosol adhesive compounds used to apply tack to our platen in order to secure the garment during production. We now use Tex Tac water base platen adhesive from Printa Systems. Our screen printing shop now enjoys cleaner air and healthier lungs.

At Serigraphx we pride ourselves in delivering the best screen printing products possible, but we are also a mindful company that takes our environment seriously. Going green not only makes sense, it is also an economically sound investment that will pay dividends in the future.
